TAKING THE TEST IN YOUR OWN CAR
So you’ve booked your test, but you want to use your own car. You don’t have to use your instructor’s car to take your test, but first there are some things that you need to check;
• Your car must be properly insured, and the examiner may ask you to sign a declaration to this effect.
• The car must be fit for test purpose. Some cars such as convertibles may not be suitable for a driving test – you should check with your local test centre before applying for your test.
• The car must have a current MOT certificate, be fully/properly taxed, and legally roadworthy. Remember to perform regular maintenance on the car before the test. Check your tyres are fully inflated with adequate tread and that all your lights are functioning correctly.
• There must be front passenger seatbelts and they must work correctly.
• You must display ‘L’ plates on the front and rear of the car.
• An additional interior rear-view mirror must also be fitted for the examiner. You can buy these complete with suction pads from any car accessory shop.
• If you have a hire car, it is unlikely to be insured for a driving test. You will need to check first.
• And last but not least, don’t forget to fill up with fuel!! If the above points are not in order, your test could be cancelled and you may lose your fee.
