International Identifier Codes
By Sarah GandertonWhen driving in a foreign country a vehicle must display a badge to show its country of origin, known as an international Identifier code. These were introduced by international convention in 1909, and updated in 1926. And by 1949 were made legal in all countries by the United Nations.
The code is usually displayed on a white oval sticker on the rear of the vehicle, or more recently the code appears in a small box on the vehicle’s number plate. If towing a trailer or caravan, the country code must also appear on there. It should be displayed on the back of the vehicle as close to the rear number plate as possible.
When driving a British registered vehicle in another country the GB code will need to be displayed, but here is a list of many of the other official country codes, which might appear on British Roads:
