avoiding Congestion
by Sarah Ganderton
Here are a few tips on how to avoid congestion:
Plan your route and allowed sufficient time. You can check the route using a road atlas, a satellite navigation device, or a route planning website such the AA, RAC or Transport Direct at www.transportdirect.info
Don’t start a long trip if you are already tired as you wont be able to concentrate as much on the road and other traffic. Take regular breaks during the journey to avoid getting overly tired and if necessary wind down the window for fresh air.
Check for details of road works that might cause delays to your journey. Information can be found:
online at www.highways.gov.uk/trafficinfo and www.bbc.co.uk
by telephone on 08700 660 115
on local Radio
on Ceefax and teletext

Make sure your vehicle is roadworthy and always carry a spare tyre in good condition. Breaking down might cause an obstruction to other traffic.
Weather conditions can have a serious impact on your journey, influencing how long it will take, as well as when and how you choose to travel and which route you take. Information is available in many places:
variable message signs along motorways and major roads
websites such as www.metoffice.gov.uk and www.environment-agency.gov.uk/floodwarning
BBC national and local travel news on TV and radio
automated telephone line updates on 08700 660 115
information points available at some motorway service areas.
Always keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front. The closer you drive the less chance you have of avoiding an accident. You should follow the “two second rule” counting two seconds between you and the car in front
Check you have enough fuel before you set off and take emergency items for extreme weather: bottled water and sunglasses for hot weather, or extra jumpers, blankets, energy food and a shovel for cold weather and snow.
